# Why are my aspen trees dying?

Usually stress from drought, often on top of crowding by conifers, browsing or trunk cankers. Utah State University Extension describes both a slow decline tied to conifer encroachment and a sudden decline set off by drought.

## The usual causes

Utah State University Extension names conifer encroachment as the driver of long-term aspen decline, and drought as the trigger for short-term sudden aspen decline. Drought-killed canopy trees combined with heavy browsing of young shoots can collapse a whole stand, because aspen regrow from root suckers that browsing removes.

A Western Aspen Alliance newsletter adds that Cytospora canker has been linked to drought stress. The sources we read are about the Intermountain West and do not single out Nevada, so we use them for the pattern.

## Yard aspen versus a mountain stand

Aspens in a yard are often grown outside their natural setting, and heat, drought and dry years can weaken them. See [quaking aspen](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/quaking-aspen/).

Look at the whole tree: thin or small leaves, dead twigs at the top, dark sunken patches on the trunk, and sprouts at the base. These clues tell an arborist where the problem started, and a photo helps.

## When pruning or removal is the answer

We do not spray, inject or fertilize; our role is to diagnose and decide. If the dead parts are limited, dead wooding and careful pruning can help. If the trunk is cankered or the tree is mostly dead and over a house, a driveway or a fence, removal is the safe answer.

Tell the arborist about watering, drought years and any recent changes in the yard, and read [drought stress and dieback](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/drought-stress-and-dieback/) for the wider picture. At Tahoe, a live tree over 14 inches across needs a permit before removal. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.

Photos taken in summer, when the tree should be in full leaf, are the most useful. Send the whole tree, the top, the trunk and any dark patches, with the year you planted it or first noticed the problem.
