# Will a ground stump sprout again?

Grinding removes the stump and prevents new growth from it, but some species keep sprouting from roots left in the ground. Aspen, cottonwood, poplar and Siberian elm are the usual ones.

## Why roots sprout

A living root holds food and buds. When the top is gone, some species use that stored energy to send up suckers. The U.S. Forest Service says aspen sprouts from its roots after stems are cut, burned or killed, and that root sprouting is its most common way of regenerating. Others behave in a similar way, and shoots may show up across the lawn some distance from where the stump stood.

## What our site says, and what to ask

Our own description of grinding is that it removes the stump from the ground and prevents new foliage from growing from the roots. For most trees that is right. For species known for suckering, ask the arborist before you plan the spot, and say which tree it was. We have not published a guarantee for any species.

Small shoots can be cut as they appear. Repeated cutting weakens roots over time.

## What not to do

We do not offer spraying or herbicide treatments, and we do not give treatment advice. If shoots keep coming, call the office and the arborist will say what can be done.

If you are planning to replace the tree, think about the species too. A different tree that does not sucker is a quieter choice for a spot near a lawn or foundation. The arborist can tell you what was growing and what is likely to come back from your photos and a visit. Tree planting is not a service we offer, so a nursery would pick the replacement. If shoots appear next season, call the office and describe them. Photos of the original tree, its leaves or bark, help the arborist name the species when you call or send the estimate form, and the answer about sprouting follows from that.
