# How long does stump grinding take?

It depends on the stump, and we do not promise a time. Size, wood, number of stumps and how easily the machine reaches them decide the length of the job.

## What changes the time

A wide stump with big surface roots takes longer than a narrow one. Dry, hard wood grinds more slowly than fresh. Several stumps in one visit take longer, although they save separate trips. Access plays a big part: a machine that drives right up is quicker than one that has to be set up in a tight backyard.

## What adds to the day

Cleanup of chips, filling or leveling the hole, and clearing roots that cross a path all take time. If the stump is next to a wall, fence or buried line, the crew works slowly and carefully there, which is the right way to do it. Rock or wire in the wood can slow the work too.

## How to plan

Ask the arborist at the estimate how the day will go, including whether chips are left or taken. Mark sprinklers and call 811 beforehand so there is no delay on the day. If you have more than one stump, ask whether they can be done on the same visit, and whether the order matters. Stumps in a row along a fence are quicker than stumps spread around a property. Ask what the crew will do about the chips and the hole before they leave, because those steps are part of the job and should be on the estimate. No time is promised on this page, and the arborist at the visit can give you a realistic plan. If the day needs to fit around work or a school run, say so when you book, and the office will tell you honestly what the crew can do around it.
