# Can you grind a stump next to a fence, wall or foundation?

Often, but not always to the last inch. The arborist checks how close a machine can safely get and may leave a small piece against the structure rather than risk damage.

## The limits of a machine

A grinder has a cutting wheel with a certain reach and a body of a certain width, so there is a point where it cannot get closer without touching the wall or fence. Vibration is also a concern against an old or weak wall. That is why we cannot promise a method before seeing the site.

## What the arborist will weigh

Is the fence on posts set in the ground, and where? Does the foundation have a wall, a drain or a utility line close by? Is there room to approach from more than one side? Sometimes a smaller approach or a hand-cut finish near the wall is the answer; sometimes the right choice is to leave the last bit and let it decay.

## What you can do

Tell the office where the stump is, how close it is and what stands next to it. Photos help. Call 811 beforehand for public utilities, and point out private lines, since a pipe, gas line or electric cable often runs along a foundation.

If the stump touches a property line, see [the permits and rules questions](https://battleborntreeservice.com/faq/permits-and-rules/), and talk to your neighbor before work starts.

If the answer is to leave a small remnant, ask how much will remain and whether it will rot away on its own. A few inches of old wood against a wall is rarely a problem if it is below the soil line, and it avoids damage to a structure that costs far more to repair. The estimate can say so in writing. If you would rather the stump go entirely, say that at the visit so the arborist can plan a different approach. Fences set in concrete or built on a retaining wall need extra care, so mention both when you describe the spot.
