# When should maples be pruned in Northern Nevada?

Prune maples in late winter while they are dormant, and take dead, broken or hazardous limbs off at any time of year. Maples may ooze sap from late-winter cuts, which looks alarming but is not by itself a reason to wait.

## Late winter is the working window

Maple is a deciduous shade tree, so our general rule applies: prune while dormant, before the spring growth flush. With the leaves gone you can see crossing limbs, dead wood and the tight forks that matter on maples. The ISA says growth and wound closure are best when pruning happens before the spring flush.

Silver maple is common in Northern Nevada yards. Its wood is brittle and its long limbs split at unions, so the useful cuts take weight off the ends of long limbs and clear dead and crossing branches. The species pages are the place for its traits: [silver maple](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/silver-maple/).

## Sap bleeding

Maples can bleed sap from cuts made in late winter and early spring, when the sap is moving. It runs and then stops. We have not found a Nevada source that treats it as harm, so we describe it as a cosmetic surprise and not a reason to cancel a job. If you want to avoid it, ask the arborist about timing for your tree.

## Watch the weather, not the date

Late winter here is not one temperature. Carson City's weather station counts about 146 days a year at or below 32 degrees, and Minden's counts about 189, so valleys differ in when trees wake up. The practical lesson from UNR Extension's fruit-tree guidance is to work from the weather and the buds, not the calendar. A maple that has already begun to push buds needs an arborist's opinion before a heavy cut.

## What about the rest of the year

Hazards come off immediately. Heavy cuts to live wood are best avoided right after the spring flush. For the general calendar see [best time to prune in Northern Nevada](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/best-time-to-prune-trees-northern-nevada/), and for how much to take, [how much at once](https://battleborntreeservice.com/faq/pruning-and-trimming/how-much-of-a-tree-can-be-pruned-at-once/).
