# Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Sparks?

We found no City of Sparks permit for removing a tree on private property. The Truckee Meadows Water Authority's summary of local ordinances notes that the city's urban forestry program was eliminated in 2008, though right-of-way, special districts and HOAs can still have a say.

## What the missing permit means

The TMWA page says the Sparks City Council eliminated the urban forestry program in 2008 because of budget cuts. We read that as the reason there is no city tree office issuing private permits, but we did not find a statement from the city saying so in as many words, so a call to Sparks is the final check.

The finding is about a tree that stands wholly on your lot. It says nothing about trees on your neighbor's side or in the street.

## Where a permit-free tree can still be restricted

A tree in the strip between sidewalk and street is usually in the public right-of-way and is not simply yours to remove. Washoe County is separate from the city: its Parks and Open Space staff care for public trees in county parks.

Covenants are the other layer. Many newer Sparks subdivisions have homeowners associations whose rules reach front-yard trees. Read the CC&Rs or ask the management company before the saw starts.

## Fire and utilities

The local fire agency may have its own view of dead trees and brush on your lot. See [tree service in Sparks](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/sparks/) for the local numbers.

If a tree or limb is near a power line, stay clear; NV Energy handles its own lines. The arborist at the estimate visit tells you whether anything in the plan changes because of a line, a right-of-way or an HOA.

If you have a notice from the city, an HOA or a utility about a tree, bring it to the visit. A written note from the agency answers most permit questions faster than a phone tree. Our free estimate can also list the work in stages if part of it needs approval first.
