# Who handles defensible-space tree permits at Lake Tahoe?

Your local fire protection district. TRPA says tree removal for defensible space can be permitted by the local fire agency, which on the Nevada side means the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District for Incline Village and Crystal Bay, and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District for the south shore.

## Two districts, two websites

The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District offers online scheduling for defensible space inspections. It notes that an inspection is typically required for projects needing a Washoe County permit, such as building permits or short-term rentals, and may also be requested after a notice from the district, for insurance or at the owner's request.

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District says it has inspectors who can evaluate a property and issue documentation that most insurance companies accept, and that its inspectors are certified to issue TRPA tree removal permits when removal is needed for fire safety. It says inspections are available year-round, weather permitting, and free for current Tahoe Douglas property owners.

## Limits to know

Tahoe Douglas does not evaluate unbuilt properties or projects still in planning; tree evaluations come after construction is complete. Inspections requested for a real estate transaction have their own fee. Hazard tree marking in the winter is handled through the TRPA forester.

TRPA keeps the rest. Work in stream environment zones, the backshore of the lake or other sensitive areas goes to TRPA review. And most trees under 14 inches across can come out without a tree removal permit, though that is no reason to skip the inspection.

## Where we come in

Contact the district first. The inspector marks what the district wants, and our crews can do that work to the district's direction, whether it is limbing up, thinning or removing marked trees. We do not issue permits.
