# Can I remove a tree at Tahoe to improve my lake view?

TRPA decides, and we cannot promise a yes. The TRPA page we read lists permit thresholds and fire-safety removal but gives no view exception, so a request for a lake view is a question to put to its forester before any work.

## What the thresholds say

TRPA requires a permit to remove a live tree larger than 14 inches diameter at breast height. On a lakeshore lot, the line drops to 6 inches for trees between the house and the lake, which is exactly where view trees tend to stand. Trees in stream environment zones or the backshore, and trees planted or retained under an earlier permit, need a permit at any size.

Trees under those sizes outside sensitive areas generally need no tree removal permit, but cutting live branches from the upper two-thirds of a tree does, unless an exception applies.

## Why the answer is not ours

Whether a view is a good enough reason for TRPA to approve a permit is a question for the agency. The page we read does not list one, and we did not find a published view standard, so we do not guess. TRPA notes that a forester visits the property, assesses the trees and issues a permit for any trees they mark.

The agency's forester can be reached at (775) 589-5294 and applications can be submitted online. Ask for the answer in writing for your parcel.

## What we can do

Our ISA Certified Arborists can tell you the diameter, the tree's condition and what a pruned alternative would involve, which the forester may ask about. Measure your tree first with the checker in [the Tahoe permit guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/tahoe-tree-removal-permits-dbh/); breast height is 4.5 feet above the ground on the uphill side.

If the work is allowed, our crews do removal and trimming with a crane or boom truck when the site needs it. Do not start without the agency's go-ahead. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) or use the [free estimate form](https://battleborntreeservice.com/free-estimate/).
