# Does a crane job need a street or lane permit?

It can, if the crane or the work sits in the public street or right-of-way. We did not find a single rule that covers every city, so check with the city that owns the street.

## When the street comes into it

A crane on your driveway or lawn is on private property. A crane that has to stand in the road, or a job that closes a lane, uses public right-of-way, and that belongs to the city. Where a rule exists, it is the city's, and it can differ for a state highway or a county road.

## What we found

The City of Reno says a Tree Work Permit is required for work in City rights-of-way, and that a Certified Arborist must do that work; there is no permit for private property. For Carson City, check with Public Works about right-of-way work. We did not find a published street-closure rule for tree cranes in either city or in Sparks, and we are not going to guess at one. The city decides.

## What to do

Tell the office early if the crane will need the street. The estimate visit is where that is settled, and the office can tell you what the job needs. Neighbors may need notice of a parked crane and the removal of cars; ask the crew what to expect.

A last point is timing. If a permit is needed, it may take time to arrange, which can affect the date. Ask the office at the estimate whether they expect the street to be used, so you can plan. If the answer is that the city decides, call the city and ask. Do not assume a permit is not needed because a neighbor did not need one; the answer depends on the street, the placement and the city.
