Hawthorne is the one place we list in Mineral County, 115.3 miles from our yard. This sheet sets the county against Nevada and the United States, gives its Forest Service wildfire ranking and tables Hawthorne with its households, median year built, wildfire rank and elevation. The housing row tells most of the story.

## The oldest housing in the set

Homes built before 1980 are 68.9% of the total, against 22.0% for Nevada and 49.7% for the United States. Homes built before 1960 are 27.0%, above the national 25.6%. Only 5.8% date from 2000 or later. Mobile homes are 23.5%, the highest share among the counties. Owner-occupancy is 72.5%.

The median home value is $156,200, against $435,400 for Nevada and $332,700 for the country. Hawthorne, with 1,112 households, has a median build year of 1964.

## Heating: bottled gas for half the county

Bottled gas is the main heating fuel for 48.8% of households and wood for 14.0%, the highest bottled-gas share and the highest wood share among the counties we cover. The Nevada figures are 3.0% and 1.0%.

For anyone burning wood, the household count is small, 1,830 households in all, but the share is large. The [firewood cutting permits guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/firewood-cutting-permits-nevada-public-land/) covers public-land cutting.

## Wildfire: a middle rank with no minimal zone

The county ranks above 74.6% of US communities and above 18.8% of Nevada communities for risk to homes, with wildfire likelihood at 66.6% nationally. Of 4,602 counted buildings, 36.2% are directly exposed and 63.8% indirectly. None are minimally exposed.

Hawthorne ranks lower at 51.6%. That is a national middle for the town, though the county figure takes in far more ground. The elevation of Hawthorne is 4,328 feet.

## How Mineral County compares with the others

The median year built is 1971 here, against 1981 for Carson City, 1990 for Douglas and Churchill counties, 1991 for Washoe, 1989 for Storey and 1998 for Lyon. Bottled gas is the main heating fuel for 48.8% of Mineral County households, ahead of Storey at 43.0%, Churchill at 16.0%, Lyon at 10.3%, Douglas at 8.1% and Washoe at 3.6%.

Hawthorne's own row is older than the county's, a median of 1964 against 1971, and its wildfire rank, 51.6%, is lower than the county's 74.6%. A homeowner in town should read the Hawthorne row first and the county row second.

## What this means for tree work, and what it does not

Old housing points to older trees and the jobs that follow: [trimming](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/hawthorne/tree-trimming/) and [removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/hawthorne/tree-removal/). The drive from our yard to Hawthorne is about 145 minutes without traffic, so the office is the first call: [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243).

With 1,830 households, every Mineral County percentage is a rough estimate. The sheet does not count trees or tell species.
