Indian Hills is a Douglas County community next to Carson City, 4,778 feet up. This sheet compares its Census figures with Douglas County, Nevada and the United States, then adds the Forest Service ranking, the nearest NOAA stations and the large fires mapped within about 10 miles. It sits across a county line from the city whose weather it shares.

## A county line that the weather ignores

The Carson City station sits at 4,761 feet and records 9.34 inches of precipitation, 14.0 inches of snow and a mean temperature of 51.7 F. Indian Hills is at 4,778 feet. Minden, 9.1 miles away, is beyond our 8-mile rule. Glenbrook, 8.5 miles away, sits 1,570 feet higher and is not comparable.

That is a useful rule for homeowners here: the Carson City figures describe the weather, while Douglas County describes the rules, the fire district and the housing.

## The housing row

The median home was built in 1995. Homes built before 1980 are 23.9%, and 36.5% date from 2000 or later. Owner-occupancy is 81.1%, and 87.4% of homes are single-family detached. Mobile homes are 7.4%, close to the county's 6.5%. The median value, $483,800, is below the county's $615,400. Wood heats 1.5% of households and bottled gas just 0.2%.

Housing from the mid-1990s usually means trees in mid-life, younger than those in Carson City, where 48.6% of homes predate 1980.

## The fire rows and the fires beside it

Risk to homes ranks above 96.9% of US communities and above 63.1% of Nevada communities. Of 2,951 counted buildings, 33.5% are directly exposed, 66.4% indirectly and 0.1% minimally, a footing close to that of Spanish Springs and Johnson Lane.

Of 14 fire records within about 10 miles, the closest is the Hwy 50 fire of 2003 (588 acres, 2.5 miles), listed twice under two names, followed by Voltaire in 2018 (517 acres, 3.3 miles), the only one since 2015. The Waterfall fire of 2004 (8,765 acres) has its center 6.0 miles away, and C-Hill and its two same-size 1988 records (about 1,800 acres) 4.3 miles.

## What the numbers point to

A community with this exposure share raises [defensible space](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/indian-hills/defensible-space/) and [brush mowing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/indian-hills/lot-clearing-brush-mowing/) first, and then [trimming](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/indian-hills/tree-trimming/) to lift limbs away from roofs. [Snow removal](https://battleborntreeservice.com/service-areas/indian-hills/snow-removal/) is also available here. Our [Carson City defensible-space checklist](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/defensible-space-checklist-carson-city/) applies to the same ground.

The yard is 10.2 miles away, about 15 minutes without traffic, by the distance and free-flow time calculated for this sheet.
