# Why is my pine turning brown, and is it dying?

A pine can turn brown from normal fall needle drop, drought stress or bark beetles, and the pattern on the tree tells you which to suspect. Browning of the oldest, innermost needles in fall is normal; a crown that fades evenly with pitch tubes on the trunk points to beetles.

Key takeaways

- Normal drop: inner, older needles yellow and fall in autumn, with a sharp line to green growth farther out.
- Drought stress: browning at the tips and top of the crown, often a year or two after a dry spell.
- Bark beetles: reddish pitch tubes, boring dust, and a crown that fades from green to yellow to reddish-brown.
- A crown that has turned red-brown will not recover.

This is identification only. We do not diagnose from a photo, and Battle Born does not spray or treat trees. A certified arborist can confirm the cause and say whether pruning or removal is the answer.

## What is normal needle drop?

Pines shed their oldest needles, usually in fall. University of Wisconsin Extension describes needles toward the center of the tree turning yellow or brown, sometimes all at once, with an abrupt change from yellow inside to green farther out. That is a natural process, not disease. Spruce and fir hold their needles longer, so the change is less obvious.

It points to a problem when there is no sharp line between brown and green, when new growth is off color, when whole branches or only the lower ones are affected, or when it happens in the middle of the growing season. That source is from another state, so use it for the pattern and ask a local arborist about your tree.

## What does drought stress look like on a pine?

In conifers, drought shows as browning needles and wilting twigs. Several years of stress can show up as dieback in the upper crown. Texas A&M Forest Service notes that trees may die for several years after a drought, so a pine that dried out in August can look fine until next summer.

Valley trees here live on irrigation. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put annual precipitation at 9.34 inches in Carson City and 7.35 at the Reno airport. A broken sprinkler zone or a lawn removed beneath a pine can start a decline. See [drought stress and dieback](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/drought-stress-and-dieback/) and [watering mature trees](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/watering-mature-trees-high-desert/).

## How do you recognize bark beetle attack?

The Forest Service leaflet on the Jeffrey pine beetle says attacked trees usually are not noticed until the crown fades from green to yellow to reddish-brown. Trees killed by the Jeffrey pine beetle usually fade evenly throughout the crown. Large, reddish pitch tubes on the bark mark the points of attack and can be seen long before the crown fades. Successful attacks show pink to dark-reddish pitch tubes with boring dust.

The leaflet also says trees attacked early in summer may start to fade in late fall of the same year, and trees attacked later in summer typically do not fade until late spring or early summer of the next year. By the time the crown is red-brown, the offspring beetles have likely already left the tree. Our [bark beetles in pines](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/bark-beetles-in-pines/) page lists what to look for.

## What does an arborist check?

An arborist checks whether the pitch tubes show successful attacks, how much of the crown has faded, which neighboring pines are at risk, and where the tree would fall. Drought, root problems and beetles can look alike from the street, which is why a visit is better than a guess. Battle Born Tree Service has two ISA Certified Arborists on staff, including ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A.

## When is pruning or removal the answer?

A pine with a fully faded crown will not recover, and dead pines become brittle and can drop limbs or fall, so do not wait long. The Forest Service leaflet says removing infested trees can reduce the number of trees attacked nearby the following year. A pine with mostly green crown and only dead twigs may only need [dead wooding](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/dead-wooding/). See [removing dead pines after bark beetles](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/removing-dead-pines-bark-beetles/).

In the Tahoe Basin, TRPA says no permit is needed for a dead tree that could fall on a house, and a conifer counts as dead if it has no green needles. For any other tree there, ask the agency. If a dead pine is on a house or a line, call 911 if anyone is hurt, stay away from lines and call NV Energy, then call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Moving beetle wood spreads trouble, so buy and burn firewood locally. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Is it normal for pine needles to turn brown in fall?

Yes, older inner needles yellow, brown and drop in autumn. If the browning is at the tips, on whole branches or in summer, have it looked at.

### How fast do bark beetles kill a pine?

The crown can fade months after the attack. Early summer attacks may show in late fall; later ones may not show until the next late spring or early summer.

### Can you save a pine with a red crown?

No. A crown that has turned red-brown is dead. Removal is the usual step.

### Does Battle Born treat beetles?

No. We do identification and removal or pruning decisions only. The Extension office and Nevada-licensed applicators are the contacts for treatment.
