- Fall pruning in Northern Nevada: what to cut and what to leave

# What can you prune in fall in Northern Nevada, and what should wait?

In fall you can remove dead, broken or hazardous branches from any tree. Live-wood pruning is better done when the tree is dormant: late winter for most deciduous trees and fruit trees, and early spring or summer for most conifers.

Key takeaways

- Hazards and dead wood come out any time of year.
- Most deciduous shade trees: wait for late winter.
- Fruit trees: late January and February, before growth starts.
- Most pines, spruce and fir: early spring and summer, not fall.

That timing comes from Battle Born's own pruning FAQ and matches the International Society of Arboriculture's homeowner guidance. This post applies it to the trees you see on our lots.

## What is the general rule?

If a tree has dead branches or a branch that is a hazard, prune at any time to remove the hazard. If there is no hazard, prune when the tree is dormant. That is the answer on Battle Born's FAQ, and the International Society of Arboriculture says most light, routine pruning can be done at any time of the year, with the best wound closure when cuts are made before the spring growth flush.

Fall is a poor time for large live cuts. The tree is heading into winter and the cuts will not start closing until growth resumes. Elevation moves the whole calendar: Carson City is at about 4,680 feet in USDA zone 7a, Minden at about 4,725 feet in zone 6b and Virginia City at about 6,200 feet. The higher and colder the site, the later the tree wakes up.

## How do you handle maples, ash, elms and honeylocust?

These are deciduous shade trees, so the rule is late winter, with the leaves off so the structure shows. In fall, the work that makes sense is a hazard cut: a dead limb over the driveway, a hanging branch or a broken top.

Large old trees near the house, such as the Siberian elms and silver maples common on older lots, are an arborist's call rather than a weekend job. See our [Siberian elm](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/siberian-elm/) and [silver maple](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-guide/silver-maple/) pages for what to watch.

## What about apple, pear, plum and other fruit trees?

University of Nevada, Reno Extension's guidance for backyard fruit is to prune in the dormant season, late in January and in February, before the trees start growing. Take no more than about 15 to 20 percent of the live wood on a mature tree in one year. Dead or broken branches can come out at any time. Our [fruit tree pruning guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/pruning-fruit-trees-reno-carson-city/) has the detail.

## When do you prune pines, spruce and fir?

Battle Born's timing for most conifers is early spring and summer. Do not shear or heavily cut a conifer in fall. What you can do now is remove dead branches, and note that some browning in fall is normal: pines shed their oldest, innermost needles in fall. Our post on [why a pine turns brown](https://battleborntreeservice.com/blog/when-a-pine-turns-brown/) explains how to tell the difference.

Large pines near a roof or wires should be looked at by an arborist. Climbing and cutting overhead is not a do-it-yourself job.

## What should you never do in any season?

Do not top a tree. The ISA and the ANSI A300 pruning standards reject topping, because the regrowth is weakly attached and the cut leaves large wounds. Our guide explains [why topping is not pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/why-tree-topping-is-not-pruning/). Also avoid taking off a large share of the crown at once.

## When should you call an arborist instead?

Call when the branch is above reach, over a roof or near a line, or when you are not sure what you are looking at. A certified arborist assesses every job before work begins at Battle Born Tree Service, and we have two ISA Certified Arborists on staff, including ISA Certified Arborist WE-11728A. See [tree trimming and pruning](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/tree-trimming-pruning/). Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.

Fall tasks that are fine: remove a dead limb you can see from the ground, have an arborist cut a hanging branch, and clean up storm breaks. Tasks to leave for later: shaping, thinning and size reduction. If you are unsure which bucket a job belongs in, take photos and describe it when you call, and an arborist will tell you whether it can wait.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Can I prune a maple in the fall?

Dead or hazardous branches, yes. For ordinary shaping wait until late winter while the tree is dormant.

### Is it bad to prune pines in the fall?

Battle Born's timing for most conifers is early spring and summer. Fall is for removing dead or hazardous branches only.

### When do I prune apple trees here?

Extension advises late January and February, before growth starts, and no more than about 15 to 20 percent of the live wood of a mature tree in a year.

### Does the pruning window change by town?

Yes. Higher and colder places wake up later, so the window moves later in Virginia City or Kingsbury than in the Carson Valley.
