# Why do defensible space work before winter, and what does it involve?

Fall is a good time to clear fuel around a home because the ground is open and fuel from the summer has dried. University of Nevada, Reno Extension's Living With Fire guide divides the work into Zone 0 (0 to 5 feet), Zone 1 (5 to 30 feet) and Zone 2 (30 to 100 feet), and your local fire agency decides what it expects at your address.

Key takeaways

- Zone 0: nothing that burns within 5 feet of the house, including woodpiles, combustible mulch and dead needles.
- Zone 1: lean, clean and green, with islands of plants rather than a continuous hedge.
- Zone 2: remove dead vegetation, separate shrubs and trees, remove ladder fuels.
- Ask your fire agency what it expects; the agency decides, not a contractor.

Nothing here is a statewide distance rule. Nevada law does not say 100 feet, and local fire districts set their own requirements. This post covers the zones and the work behind them.

## How risky is wildfire around Carson City?

The USDA Forest Service's Wildfire Risk to Communities data (April 2026) puts Carson City's risk to homes higher than 98.5 percent of US communities. That is a ranking of risk to homes, not a forecast. The fire history file we use shows the Waterfall Fire of 2004, mapped at 8,765 acres on the west side of Carson City, and the Davis Fire of 2024, mapped at 5,824 acres in Washoe Valley.

## What are the three zones?

| Zone | Distance | What the guide asks for |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 0 | 0 to 5 feet | Ember-resistant: clear woodpiles, combustible mulch, dead leaves and needles |
| Zone 1 | 5 to 30 feet | Lean, clean and green: minimal flammable vegetation, islands of plants, irrigated and healthy |
| Zone 2 | 30 to 100 feet | Reduced fuel: remove dead vegetation, separate shrubs and trees, remove ladder fuels |

Our [defensible space guide](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/what-is-defensible-space/) explains each zone, and the [Carson City west side checklist](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/defensible-space-checklist-carson-city/) turns them into a walk-through.

## What does a fire agency evaluation cover?

The Living With Fire guide points homeowners to their local fire agency for an inspection. At Lake Tahoe, TRPA directs you to the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District for Incline Village and Crystal Bay and the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District for the Nevada south shore. In Carson City, Reno and the valleys, ask the fire department or district that covers your address.

Questions to ask: what do you want done in each zone, by what date, who issues any tree permit, and is there a chipping program this year. We have no verified list of current programs, so we will not name one. See [evaluations and chipping programs by fire district](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/free-defensible-space-evaluations-chipping/).

## What is ladder fuel?

Ladder fuels are low vegetation that carries fire from the ground into tree crowns. Removing them, including by limbing up trees, is part of Zone 2 work. See [ladder fuels and limbing up](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/ladder-fuels-limbing-up/). Also see [junipers and other high-hazard plants](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/junipers-high-hazard-plants/), which Extension lists for removal near the house.

## What does Battle Born do?

Our crew does [defensible space and fire mitigation](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/defensible-space-fire-mitigation/), [lot clearing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/lot-clearing/), [brush mowing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/brush-mowing/) and [masticating](https://battleborntreeservice.com/tree-services/masticating/). We own a brush mower and masticating head, a chipper and dump trucks. A certified arborist assesses the trees before work begins. For choosing a method, see [mastication vs brush mowing vs hand clearing](https://battleborntreeservice.com/guides/mastication-vs-brush-mowing-vs-hand-clearing/).

Stripping the land bare is not the goal. The guide notes that removing all vegetation can bring in invasive weeds such as cheatgrass; the aim is reduced and separated fuel. Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243) for a free estimate.

Do not forget the small things that sit in Zone 0. Check under decks and stairs, move firewood, patio cushions and stored fuel, and sweep ember traps such as gutters and roof valleys. These take a weekend and cost nothing but effort. The larger tree and brush work in Zones 1 and 2 is where a crew helps, and fall is a quieter time to book it.

## Questions people ask

Still have a question? Call [775.232.8243](tel:775.232.8243). Phones are answered seven days a week.

### Does Nevada law require 100 feet of defensible space?

No single statewide distance. NRS 472.500 lets the State Forester Firewarden direct owners within its jurisdiction to remove a fire hazard, and it has no distance figure. Local districts set their own rules.

### Who inspects my property?

Your local fire agency. Call the department or district that covers your address and ask for an evaluation.

### Is fall a good time for brush work?

The ground is open and summer fuel has dried, and the work is easier before snow. We do not promise dates, so call early.

### Can I do the work myself?

Yes, many owners do part of it. Call a professional for trees, work near wires and brush on larger parcels.
